4 essential items for deer-resistant gardening
If deer were actually like Disney characters, prancing through the forest and making mischief with rabbits, we’d all get along. Unfortunately, deer have a tendency to go off script, wreaking havoc with your hostas, gobbling up your garden, and just generally making themselves a nuisance around the yard. Here are four items you can use to stop their ravenous rampage:
- Raised beds with hardwire mesh let the sun and rain in, but keep the deer out. Look for DIY kits online or at garden centers.
- Deer resistant blooms. The deer are less likely to drop by for a snack if what you’re growing is not their cup of tea. Apparently, they’re picky eaters because there are hundreds of options they consider unappetizing. Choose from varieties of geraniums, phlox, campanula, and more.
- Deer resistant tree wrap. Wind these around young or ornamental trees to keep male bucks from ripping up the bark and destroying your tree with their horns.
- Deer repellent sprays. There are plenty of brands from which to choose. Make sure that your spray is environmentally friendly with only natural ingredients (like coyote urine. Ewww.)
