How much water does your lawn need?
a. ½ inch per week
b. 1 inch per week
c. 2 inches per week
Answer: Your lawn needs around 1 inch of water per week. But how do you determine this?
The easiest way to determine if you’re watering enough is to use a shovel or screwdriver to test how deep the water penetrates in your soil. Turn your sprinkler on, put your screwdriver into the soil at certain time intervals, and the note the time it took for the soil to be soaked to a depth of at least 6 inches. This helps you determine how long you’ll need to water your lawn in the future.
Also, you can tell by appearance. If you find your lawn has taken on a grayish cast or appears to be dull green, you’re not watering enough. Or use touch and feel if your grass is dry or brittle.
If your lawn is soggy, you’re watering too much!
