Summer Solstice, June 21, 2022 — the day Minnesotans have been waiting for — the first day of summer!
We use the term, solstice, two times per year, but what does it mean?
It is a combination of two Latin words, sol and sister — which mean sun and stand still, respectively. During the summer solstice, as seen from the Earth, the sun reaches it most northern position and doesn’t move north or south during the day. It stands still at the Tropic of Cancer.
As landscapers, the position of the sun is important in choosing which plants to sow in the front of your yard or the back. Your fruit and vegetable garden should be south facing to receive the most amount of sun as possible.
